Summertime its all about backyard barbecues, long days at the lake and stopping at the neighborhood kids lemonade stand.
Hot days and warm evenings make it a delightful time to consider a trip to the mountains and fortunately theres no shortage of local backpacking opportunities. Treat yourself to some incredible scenery, a confidence-building sense of accomplishment and some soul-soothing calm.
If it’s a smooth beat you’re after, you have plenty of options, including Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women, who perform at the Cascade Theatre this month. There are also outdoor music festivals, like MarketFest and the Mosquito Serenade, which give us a great excuse to enjoy diverse music and tasty food with family friends in the middle of the week. Cool in every way.
If you’d like a little respite from skyward-soaring temperatures, zip up Interstate 5 to the acclaimed Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland. It’s the 50th anniversary of the Elizabethan Stage, the oldest existing full scale Elizabethan stage in the Western Hemisphere.
We offer special thanks this month to the Shasta Lake Garden Project, which has replaced weeds with flower gardens down Shasta Dam Boulevard. They’ll celebrate with the 12th annual Shasta Lake Garden Tour and Victorian Tea. Looking for something to wear, or perhaps an antique teapot to remember the occasion? Try the Discovery Shop on Park Marina Drive. This ever-changing thrift shop also raises hundreds of thousands of dollars each year for the American Cancer Society. It’s shopping you can feel good about.
And be sure to take a moment to glimpse the life and artistry of Cissi Lundgren, who at age 89 continues to create intricate ink images on paper. A treasure trove of her work is now being revealed in the North State, and it reflects almost a century of the evolution of a creative mind.
We’ll see you at the Sundial Bridge the world’s tallest sundial. What better place to celebrate the summer solstice? Watch the bridge’s 217 foot angled pylon casts its giant shadow to tell the time precisely on the longest day of the year.
