Budding Boughs
March 01, 2009
Though we celebrate the luck of the Irish this month, we at Enjoy know that we each found the real pot of gold when we landed here in the North State.
One of our joys is to introduce you to the people and organizations who make our area so remarkable, and Shasta Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation is one such group. Learn more about the volunteers who care for injured and orphaned wildlife until they are healthy enough to return to the wild. The Shasta Senior Nutrition Program is another feel-good endeavor that provides food and companionship to the North State’s elderly and underprivileged residents.
Our neighbors continue to fascinate us. Prepare to be impressed by Roland Winbeckler, whose show-stopping, life-sized cakes have earned him a spot on the Food Network’s “Food Challenge.” He’ll have eight hours to create a replica of a Sesame Street celebrity – out of cake. Another personality we know you’ll enjoy is Patrick Moriarty, a native of Ireland who has devoted his life to serving others.
Who isn’t looking for a way to improve their lives and communities? That’s exactly what participants in Leadership Redding are doing. The program introduces ambitious North State residents to the area’s many dimensions from an insider’s perspective, and graduates have gone on to make their mark on the North State in meaningful ways. Members of the Red Bluff Garden Club are also improving their community, one bulb and seedling at a time. You’ll be inspired to grab your hat and trowel.
Sharing our creativity is another way we make our communities richer. Mark your calendar for the March 14 Art Hop – the map is in the back so you can decide which spots you don’t want to miss. Let us pique your interest with a peek into the bold, colorful images created by Redding’s Naomi Rose, one of Art Hop’s featured artists, whose works explore themes that range from loneliness to beauty to motherhood.
If you’re determined to get out and explore this incredible place we call home, spend some time with the Northern California Outdoor Adventurers. “We’re just a group of like-minded people who want to go out and have a good time,” says Annie Hahn, the group’s founder. Ice-cave exploring, skydiving and climbing Mt. Shasta are among their adrenaline-pumping activities (walking and exploring historical sites are also on the list).
Don’t forget to stop and absorb the beauty of your surroundings – you might even find a four-leaf clover along the way. Enjoy!
