As fireworks explode overhead, put a little sparkle into your own life: Lose yourself in a masterful work of art, linger over a frosty confection or share random kindness with those around you.
Celebrate to the beat of a different drummer with some inspiration from masters of the arts. Shasta Taiko has led the taiko Japanese drumming movement in America, and the artists will treat the North State to two special engagements: they’ll kick off the inaugural 2nd Saturday Art Hop in front of the Cascade Theatre on July 12th and they will inspire audiences at the Shasta Yama festival on July 26th at the base of Mt. Shasta. You won’t forget these shows.
The art of living your personal history and sustaining the future is the premise behind Bruce and Doni Greenberg’s storybook home. A journalist and her craftsman husband tell the tale of childhood memories-meet-woodworker’s schoolhouse in every groove, solar panel and reclaimed cabinet of this Arts and Crafts-style home. Learn why Bruce calls Doni “Rosie the Riveter.”
Call us old-fashioned, but the Fourth of July brings out the simple pleasures in our lives. One that comes to mind… ice cream. There’s nothing like a confection pulled from an old-fashioned soda fountain, like the one at Scott Valley Drug in Etna (the only other alabaster soda head is at the Carnation Creamery at Disneyland, we’re told). Try a sidecar – a rootbeer float with a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream balanced on the side of a frosty mug.
Love is what keeps us together, so why not Dutch Love? This term embodies the spirit behind the friendly faces that peek out of the windows of the five Redding Dutch Bros. coffee shops. “In today’s fast-paced world, people long for that one or two minutes of conversation,” says Chris Resner, the proud owner of our local Dutch Bros. and devoted community supporter. From Make-A-Wish Foundation donations to yearbook ads and Girl Scout cookie purchases, you can feel the love from this Dutch Bros. owner.
Take great pride in your independence this month by sharing your passion for your home, the arts, generosity and good old-fashioned conversation. Happy Fourth of July.

Story: Jon Lewis When Downtown Redding Covered Up Today, you’d have to squint pretty hard to see it, but some 33 years ago, when the streets were blocked off and roof went up, the mall in downtown Redding was quite the deal. “People were hopeful it would bring a resurgence to downtown Redding,” recalls Gary Lewis, who was 22 when the mall was created. Lewis, now the president of Shasta College, had a front-row seat for the proceedings since he was helping his father run the L... More
