Author Event at the Siskiyou Arts Museum
“Diane Rapaport to discuss the rebirth of a mining town, now arts destination”
On Thursday, June 11th from 3pm to 5pm, author Diane Sward Rapaport will be signing her book, Home Sweet Jerome, Death and Rebirth of Arizona’s Richest Copper City, at the Siskiyou Arts Museum in Dunsmuir. The book details the transformation of Jerome, Arizona, from a near ghost mining town with a population of fewer than 200 residents to a fully restored art and history Mecca, that draws more than a million visitors a year. “It is a story of how uncommon people - hippies, old timers, business people, outlaws and artists - overcome antipathy for each other to create a new future from the shards of the past,” notes Rapaport. Well known Siskiyou County photographer, Bob Swanson, contributed a number of photographs including those on the back cover. According to Swanson, “The story is one that parallels the history of many small rural northern California towns. Jerome was formerly a mining town. Northern California is full of former mining, timber and railroad towns that are trying to re-invent themselves. There is much we can learn from Jerome’s story.” Ms. Rapaport will be at Siskiyou Arts Museum where several of the photographs of Jerome are on display as part of Bob Swanson’s photographic exhibition. Swanson’s show, “Building Stories: The Artistry of the Built Environment,” will be on display through June. Siskiyou Arts Museum is located at 5824 Dunsmuir Ave. For more information, call 235-4711.
