What does it take to be a clinical psychologist, criminologist or see inside a heart? And perhaps more importantly, how does one begin to travel the distance from middle school to a dynamic career in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields expected to generate higher paying jobs for today’s students? The Women in STEM Conference (formerly known as Women in Math and Science Conference) is an event designed to inspire middle school girls to become the next generation of scientists, engineers, mathematicians and computer scientists; fields in which women are underrepresented. The event provides access to information, hands-on demonstrations and mentors in these areas. The conference is a collaborative effort, co-sponsored by the American Association of University Women, AAUW Redding branch, Shasta College and the Shasta County Office of Education. It was established in 1995 and has become a bi-annual tradition held in the Spring of even numbered years. The 2014 Women in STEM Conference will be held March 8, 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Shasta College. Registration packets may be obtained from www.shastacoe.org/page.cfm?p=2996 or www.aauwredding.org. Early registration is recommended due to space limitations. The cost is $20 per person and includes lunch. It must be postmarked by February 21. Late registration received after February 21st or at the door is $25 and is accepted as space allows.
