Top 10 Burger Joints In The North State

We’ve tallied up the nominations, accounted for the “likes” and conducted some in-office tiebreakers to determine the final results.  Here’s what our readers say are the best burger joints in Northern California:

#1: Yaks

Coming in first place is Yaks, located in the quaint town of Dunsmuir.  It’s no surprise it was named one of America’s Top 100 restaurants, offering a delicious menu of gourmet burgers, salads and brews—oh, and don’t get us started on the world famous sticky buns!

#2: The Habit Burger Grill

First runner-up is the Habit’s Redding location.  It’s popular for its mouth watering Charburgers served up with your choice of tasty sweet potato fries, garlic herb fries, tempura fried green beans, etc.!  If you haven’t yet, give them a try.

#3: Alpine Drive Inn

Second runner-up is this "old-timey" drive inn based in Burney.  It makes the perfect stop after a hike at Burney Falls and holds a 4.5 star rating on Trip Advisor.  Reviews praise the joint for its burgers, deep fried mushrooms, tater tots and refreshing soft serve cones!

#4: JJ’s Café

Located in Old Station—a meeting spot between the Cascades, the Sierra, and the Great Basin—this Old Western themed café is the place to be! Praised for its bacon cheeseburger, the café also makes its own pastrami and has coin operated showers for weary travelers and hikers.  How Cool-Hand-Luke is that!

#5: Bartels Giant Burger

This family owned and operated burger joint has been around since 1975. Today it can be found in five different locations throughout the North State: Redding, Anderson, Corning and Chuck Wagon.

#6: Dam Burger

Based in Downtown Redding, the burger joint began in 1938 and has since become a Redding institution, serving several generations of loyal customers.  Burgers are made to order using freshly ground beef locally sourced from R&R Quality Meats.

#7: Maxwell’s Eatery

It’s the place to be in Downtown Redding if you’re looking for good beer, good food, and good people. This bar and grill serves up an over the top burger with cheddar, fried jalapeños and peanut butter—yes, we were a little taken aback, too.  But, don’t judge it until you’ve tried it!

#8: Becca’s Café

This low-key café is located in Anderson, serving breakfast and lunch seven days a week. It holds a 4.5 star rating on Trip Advisor with reviews that praise the food/price ratio and welcoming environment.

#9: Chatty Kathy’s

Located just East of Burney in Johnson Park, this sit-down diner is sure to be a haven for anyone passing through the intermountain region. Plus, we hear the Ortega burger is to die for!

#10: Shameless O’Leery’s

It’s known as Redding’s only true Irish pub, having won “Best Bar Food” by Best of the North State since opening in 2011. With a delicious selection of pub burgers and unique appetizers such as fried pickles, you’ll find plenty to enjoy!

Here’s a big thank you to our North State readers for nominating their favorite burger joints and sharing their input.  We love you all!
