Step 1: Boil the Eggs
Start by boiling a batch of eggs. Place a pot of water big enough to fit all your eggs on the stovetop and wait for the water to boil. Once boiling, add in your eggs for 12-14 minutes. Let eggs cool before continuing to Step 2.
Tip: To quicken the cooling process place hard-boiled eggs in a bowl of ice water.
Step 2: Soak & Prep
After the eggs cool, soak them in a bowl of vinegar for 20 minutes. This will help the dye set more permanently and vibrantly to the egg's shell.
Prepare the cool whip and food dye while the eggs soak. Spread an inch-thick layer of cool whip in a shallow glass pan. Place drops of food coloring on top of the cool whip. You can do more than one color and as many drops as you like; I used one color for a white-blue combination.
When the surface is fairly covered with food coloring, take a thin butter knife (a chopstick or bamboo skewer will substitute nicely) and zig-zag it across the cool whip to "marble" the colors.
Step 3: Roll
Put on a pair of rubber gloves—it's going to get messy! When the "marbled" cool whip is ready, pick up a hard-boiled egg and gently set it on the cool whip. Slowly roll the egg over the surface, letting the cool whip coat the entire egg. Make sure there is no shell showing and then place the egg on a paper towel. Repeat this until all your eggs are covered.
Don't wipe off any of the cool whip. Simply let the eggs dry for 20 minutes or until they have completely dried.
Step 4: Dab & Display
Once dry, clean off your eggs by carefully dipping each into a bowl of water. The water should remove most of the cool whip; gently swish the egg around in the water if the cool whip isn't coming off. Dab each egg dry with a paper towel being careful not to rub or smear the dye off the shell.
After each egg has been cleaned, add them to a colorful display for Easter!
*If you plan to eat your eggs, store them in the refrigerator.
