Work of Art

May 2017

The Highland Art Center’s Summer Series of Featured Artists kicks off in May with an incredibly special show. Pat Harger, a fourth generation Trinity County native and the much celebrated winner of last year’s Juried Art Show, will be back with a collection of intricate found object sculptures. From his stunning creatures crafted from stainless steel silverware, to his large scale works of art created from hand molded stainless steel, you will find yourself mesmerized by his attention to detail and brilliant creativity. As if that wasn’t enough, the exhibit becomes an absolute showstopper with the addition of two family members, nationally published poet William Harger and accomplished quilter Diane Goldsmith Harger. William’s journey as an aeronautical engineer and working for IBM as an inventor, co-founding the Environmental school (NEED Camp) at Whiskeytown, and teaching college level Environmental Ethics and Sociology for 2 decades lends beautiful color and perspective to his writing. His deep yet witty words dance around themes of the environment, love, life, philosophy, and relationships. Diane’s history with quilting is heavily influenced by her study of Japanese textile arts. Her pieces feature fabrics she hand dyes using Shibori, indigo, and other dying techniques including ice dying. However, she is particularly known for the pleating, tucking, and hand smocking techniques she uses to create the fabric manipulation she incorporates into her work. This family of truly gifted artists have come together to showcase their work in an exhibit you won’t want to miss!

Join us for the opening reception on May 6 from 5 to 8 pm. Light refreshments will be served and at 6:30 we will have the special treat of hearing a reading by William. You’d be amazed by how many pieces and parts go into one of Pat’s sculptures, or how many types of fabric come together to create the intricate collages Diane creates. The show will be on display through May 30 during normal business hours, Tues.-Sat. 11 to 5 pm.
