Chico Performances presents the 2016 Chico World Music Festival, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10. This marks the 23rd anniversary, and will kick off at 10 am with a full schedule of free music performances by five bands on three stages, a Kids Stage featuring eight performances by kids for kids, crafters, artisans and kids’ activities and booths.
The Chico World Music Festival is a free community event that focuses on bringing music, food and crafters with origins from all over the world to the North State community. This year’s main stage performances include Troker, a jazz/funk band from Guadalajara Mexico, the Arabic Music Quartet featuring musicians from various countries in the Middle East, Karamo Susso and Ousseynou Kouyate performing music and dance that originates from West Africa, SonoMusette recapturing the moody, melancholic sound and spirit of mid twentieth-century Paris and finally Matthew Songmaker and his band, The December Bicyclists, mixing in the fiddle and some American Bluegrass.
In addition to the music, art and crafts classes will be put on by the Chico Art Centre for both kids and adults. The Valene L. Smith Museum of Anthropology will be hosting craft workshops with the theme of dragons from all over the world, including a “Giant Community Dragon Puppet for a grand finale parade.” An interactive science booth titled “Good Vibrations” will be hosted by the Gateway Science Museum to teach kids and adults the relationship between sound and vibrations. The Ruth Rowland Taylor Stage is once again hosting musical workshops with some of the performers.
For those who can’t make it to the festival, NSPR KCHO 91.7 will be broadcasting the performances form the Laxson Stage from 12-3 pm.
