On the Water

Top Ten on the Water Activities

Living in the North State gives us many opportunities to get out and play in, on and around different bodies of water. For some, it’s the hot summer weather that pushes us towards the ocean, lakes, streams, rivers and swimming pools. For others it’s the love for your favorite (water) sport - no matter what the season is. Here are some of your favorite pastimes:

Fishing:  Whether by boat or by land, there are plenty of opportunities to reel in the big one.

Swimming:  Lots of us just want to take the plunge when it heats up. Backyard, lakeside, creekside or any of the great pool locations in the area are a perfect place for getting wet – and maybe getting fit at the same time.

Boating:   This one's a given, with so many beautiful lakes within close proximity: Shasta, Whiskeytown, Trinity, Siskiyou and Almanor to name a few. Go high speed or pull over and read a good book while anchored by the shore.

Floating:  Some prefer for full-throttle action, while others just love to lounge around in the sunshine, floating their cares away on a raft. The sounds of lapping water can have a truly calming effect.

Wakeboarding:  One of the more popular sports on the lake, with a fast growing popularity. Test your skills with tricks ranging from a simple 180 to the more technical whirly-bird. Stick it clean!

Houseboating:  Lake Shasta has the largest fleet of houseboats of any lake in America. From your regular pontoon boats to triple-decker duzies, complete with slides and who knows what else, we've got the gamut cruising the lakes.

Tubing:  Some will brave the chilly waters of the Sacramento, some brave the more relaxed rapids of local creeks, while others go for a wild ride behind a speed boat. Pick your speed, pick your style and go for it.

Coast Camping:  How fortunate we are to have such a wide variety of water options so close by. With the ocean just a few hours away, it can be a perfect getaway from some of the hotter days of summer. Sticking your toes in the sand, roasting hot dogs and marshmallows over a campfire and gazing out at the stars from a sleeping bag... a perfect getaway.

Seadoo/Jet skiing:  For thrills and spills on the lake, take a ride on your own personal watercraft... one seaters, two seaters, even three seaters offer a way to catch a wave all by yourself or not. You can even tow a skier or boarder behind one, but make sure to have an observer with you!

Kayaking:  From flat water to Class 5, there's a speed for everyone. Enjoy a relaxing paddle on the lake, watching the eagles soar overhead, or try to keep your boat upright while battling action- packed rapids.
