TOP 10 NORTH STATE LANDMARKS

People from all over the world come to Northern California to visit some of the state’s most beautiful and unique landmarks. From a popular piece of architecture to a must-visit locally owned business or restaurant that’s been around forever, here are your votes for the North State’s most popular landmarks.

1. Sundial Bridge – Designed by Santiago Calatrava, the glass-decked Sundial Bridge crosses the Sacramento River, connects to Turtle Bay Exploration Park, the McConnell Arboretum and a nationally designated trail system. The pedestrian bridge has won worldwide acclaim for its unique design.

2. Mt. Shasta – The fifth-highest peak in California, with an elevation of 14,179 feet, Mt. Shasta offers many recreational activities and has attracted the attention of poets, authors and presidents.

3. McArthur-Burney Falls – One of the most beautiful waterfalls in the country and once described by Teddy Roosevelt as the “eighth wonder of the world,” the 129-foot Burney Falls flows at 100 million gallons every day.

4. Shasta Dam – Built between 1938 and 1945, Shasta Dam is higher than the Washington Monument. It contains enough concrete to build a sidewalk three feet wide and four inches thick around the world at the Equator.

5. Shasta State Historic Park – A bustling town in the mid to late 1800s, “Old Shasta” is chock full of great North State history. Many of the original brick buildings, partially restored, still stand proud along Highway 299.

6. Lassen Volcanic National Park - Lassen Peak began erupting in 1914, with much activity in 1915. It is one of only two active volcanoes in the continental United States.

7. Bidwell Mansion – In 1964, the State Department of Parks and Recreation gained possession of this 26-room mansion and five acres of grounds surrounding the mansion that was occupied by General John Bidwell and his wife Annie Ellicott Kennedy Bidwell until their deaths in 1900 and 1918, respectively.

8. Trinidad Head Lighthouse – First lit on December 1, 1871, the Trinidad Head Lighthouse is still operational. In1 898, a fog bell house was constructed and has since been replaced. Today, fog signals are stacked next to the California’s only remaining bell house.

9. Whiskeytown Lake – Hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, kayaking, boating and taking in the beauty of the surrounding area are just a few of the many activities you can do at Whiskeytown Lake.

10. Mossbrae Falls – About 50 feet high and 150 feet wide, Mossbrae Falls is one of the most beautiful – and most photographed – waterfalls in California.
